500 Tourists Stranded in North Sikkim as Search for Missing Called Off Due to Heavy Rains

Gangtok, May 31, 2025 — Torrential rains have severely hampered rescue operations in North Sikkim, where around 500 tourists remain stranded. Authorities were forced to halt the search for eight individuals reported missing in the region due to deteriorating weather conditions and rising water levels.

Relentless rainfall has triggered landslides and flooding in several parts of the district, cutting off access routes and damaging key infrastructure. The affected areas include Chungthang, Lachung, and Lachen — popular tourist destinations now rendered inaccessible.

According to officials, the stranded tourists are safe and are being provided food, medical assistance, and shelter. Rescue teams are on standby, awaiting improvement in weather conditions to resume evacuation efforts and continue the search for the missing.

The state government has coordinated with the Indian Army and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) for aerial rescue operations. However, poor visibility and strong winds have delayed helicopter deployments.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has forecast continued heavy rainfall in the region over the next 48 hours, prompting a red alert and travel advisories for the general public.

State authorities have urged tourists to avoid travel to North Sikkim until further notice and have assured that all efforts are being made to ensure the safety of those stranded.
