Delhi Sees Spike in Fire Emergency Calls on Diwali Night; Numbers Expected to Climb

Out-of-Control Princeton Wildfire Triggers Evacuation Order in British Columbia

New Delhi (Rajeev Sharma): Diwali celebrations in the national capital led to a significant surge in fire-related emergencies, with over 170 distress calls made to the Delhi Fire Service by 11:30 PM on Monday. Authorities say the figure is likely to increase as more incidents are reported through the night.

Emergency services were kept on their toes as firecrackers, oil lamps, and other festive lighting appeared to trigger multiple fire outbreaks in different parts of the city. Fire department teams were dispatched across several locations, tackling blazes that ranged from minor residential fires to more serious flare-ups.

“Every year, we prepare for a higher volume of calls during Diwali, and this year is no exception,” said a fire official, noting that emergency teams had been placed on high alert in anticipation of such situations.

Despite public awareness campaigns and restrictions on firecracker usage, violations were reported in several neighborhoods. While officials have not confirmed any severe injuries or fatalities so far, they continue to assess the extent of damage caused by the incidents.

Delhi’s fire department had increased staffing and deployed extra firefighting vehicles ahead of the festival, anticipating the annual surge. As the night progresses, the control room remains active, coordinating responses to new reports.

Citizens are advised to observe fire safety precautions and to report any suspicious smoke or fire immediately. A full summary of incidents is expected to be released once all reports have been compiled.
